Hyperion XP-1 – A Hydrogren Electric Supercar That Does 221MPH

The Hyperion XP-1 is an incredibly unique electric supercar. It doesn’t use batteries, instead supercapacitors and hydrogen. It’s from an American startup and has a claimed top speed over 221mph, and 0-60 of just 2.2 seconds! That’s rip your head off territory. Thanks to the hydrogen fuel cell setup, it only weights 1032kg, an expected half a tonne or so lighter than Tesla’s 2020 Roadster.

According to the company, the carbon fibre hydrogren tanks will hold 1000 miles worth of motorway-speed fuel, and can be refilled in less than five minutes assuming you can find a place to fill it. Much like Tesla though, Hyperion plan to roll out filling stations across the USA.

The XP-1 is still in it’s early stages, the car you see here is a prototype although the production car will also feature active aero which doubles as solar panels that move to follow the sun when not driving at high speed. More details will be revealed closer to it’s launch, including power, torque and price – although you can expect it’s lilely a million dollar car.

It’s going to be very interesting to see this in the real world. Personally I’m not so sure, especially with having compressed flamable gas onboard, but I’m open to changing my mind.
