I know it’s not a lot to go on, but thanks to BMW’s Instagram we have a tease of what’s to come in 2022. Finally, an estate, or wagon as Americans call them, version of the BMW M3. BMW hasn’t made an M3 Touring before, but it’s been hotly requested ever since both Audi and Mercedes started offering high power estates like the S4, RS4, and C63.

If it’s anything like their upcomming M3, it should be a rocket ship that can now fit the whole family and the dog in, or the kitchen sink whichever you prefer. The new M3 Touring is slated to have 480hp and 600Nm of torque from a 3 litre twin turbo engine, which should be a good match for it’s Audi and Merc rivals, depending on the weight of course, and by 2022 when the M3 Touring is set to be available, both Mercedes with their C63 Estate and Audi with their RS4 Avant might have a refresh which can change the comparison a fair bit.

Only time will tell what the M3 Touring will have to offer, if they’ll stick with the ZF 8HP they went with in the new F90 M5 which is a pretty standard torque converter based automatic instead of the fancier dual clutch systems offered by the likes of Audi. Another looming question is whether the M3 Touring will use the same huge grilles up front like the new M4 will, or it they’ll stick with the same shape as this soon to be launched car.

Either way I’m excited. I’m an S4 Avant owner personally and love the practicality and speed of a fast estate so more options, especially from BMW, are always welcome.

I have a passion for cars, driving, working on them and talking about them. Anything fast or electric, is fair game. Own an Audi S4 B8.5 & an SV650S.
